Hawaii 2002

HAWAI'I: Aloha! Janet and I were invited to join Dale and Chris (Tina) for a week in Hawaii on the tropical island of Kauai, the third week in July. Mehalo! -- Dale and Chris. Hawaii is a 5 hour flight from Los Angeles and a 5 hour time change for Indiana (Central Time). Since we were making the trip, we took one extra day to stop in Oahu and see Pearl Harbor. It really brought WWII home when we visited the Arizona memorial where 1100 sailors are still entombed. That's where WWII really started. Then to see the Missouri battleship, "Mighty MO", right next to the Arizona -- well it was very special. The Missouri was where the Japanese surrendered. I was surprized to find out that the Missouri was just retired in 1999 and became a permanent part of the Pearl Harbor experience at that time. It's all a very fitting memorial to those who fought and gave their lives during that war. We had a little extra time before our flight to Kauai, so we hopped on board a shuttle to Waikeke to see all the ritz and glamour of that area. We had drinks at the Royal Hawaiian, where I imbibed in my first Tropical Itch, complete with a real back scratcher.

We caught our Hawaiian Air flight to Lihue, Kaua'i where Dale and Chris met up with us. Kauai is truly one of, if not the most, beautiful place I've ever seen and experienced. Called the Garden Island, it has a population of 58,000. We stayed at the Embassy Resort at Poipu Bay which is on the southern part of the island. Of course I took my clubs so Dale and I were able to play a couple of times at two different courses. I believe there are 8 or 9 courses total on the island. Kauai is only 30% accessible by car so one day we took a helicopter tour to see the other 70%. This is also the island that Hollywood has sort of adopted to film alot of those exotic movies like - South Pacific, Jurrasic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Outbreak and Donavan's Reef to name a few. Mount Kawaikini at the center of the island is reported as the wettest spot on earth with an average of 451 inches of rain per year. Conversely, the area of Poipu Bay, just a few miles away, only receives 5 inches per year. Quite a contrast.
