My Birthday Party 2004

MARCH 7, 2004: It was time for me to recognize another tick of the birthday calendar. Janet made a wonderful lasagna dinner complete with german chocolate cake for dessert. What more could I ask for? Sally and Jim, Joyce and Mary were nice enough to come over and help us celebrate.

Joyce had a good card trick: take a standard deck of cards and count out 5 piles face up. Whatever card you lay down first, you then count and add more cards to make thirteen. Therefore, if you laid down a Jack (that would count as eleven) and you'd add two more cards to that pile. Turn the 5 piles over (face down). Have someone push two piles towards you. Then you push one pile towards that person. Turn over the top cards of the remaining two piles. Add 10 to the total of those two cards. Combine the two piles pushed towards the dealer. Then deal out the number of cards that you came up with by combining those other two cards and adding ten. The remaining number of cards will match the top card on the face down deck that you had pushed towards the other person. Neat, huh?

The last picture was taken the following weekend. Guess what Janet and Dot were doing?
