Turkey Run State Park and Parke County 2001

SUNDAY DRIVE TO TURKEY RUN: Janet and I decided to take a day to see some fall foliage so we drove west to Parke County and Turkey Run State Park. I think it's been at least ten years since we went over there with the kids. That, too, was a fall day except then it was raining. Guess what happens to leaves when they get wet? That's right, they get very slipery. Guess what happened to me ten years ago at Turkey Run State Park. That's right, my feet went flying out in front of me, all of a sudden I was looking at the sky and then I hit the dirt. I had pulled my arms tight to my sides so I wouldn't dislocate my shoulders again, but that meant I wasn't protecting my fall. Knocked the wind right out of me and I still think I fractured a rib or two. But at least I didn't dislocate a shoulder. Made for a memorable day though as well as several weeks of painful recuperation.

Well this time the weather was much nicer. No rain, a little overcast, but very warm. I couldn't complain at all. Still plenty of leaves both on and off the trees. We stopped at a couple of covered bridges on the way. We think we drove by at least a half dozen more, but we couldn't find them. We picked up a free map at the first bridge, Mecca -- yes we can say we've been to Mecca now, which was a big mistake. The free map that is. Between that map and the road signs we got thoroughly confused about where we were and where we thought we were. Of course I had a good time complaining about Janet's navigating, but that map was pretty poor. We gave up and headed for the park.

Turkey Run is a beautiful state park and well worth a visit. We hiked for a couple of hours through beautiful creek canyons of rock. Up and down many stairs. It was a good workout. I think the pictures are worth a look. I'm making a mental note to myself to go back there one day for a canoe trip.

On the way back to Indy, we stopped at the Monon Restaurant on the north side of Greencastle for desert and coffee. Highly recommended.
